Tape drawing is a speciality of the automotive design world. A tape drawing is an ideal way of defining the proportions of a design from the beginning of the design process.
The tape drawing is then digitalized and used as a basis for further development in CAD or CAS.

I use this process at the start of most projects when I wont to be sure that the proportions are correct before moving on to the next design phases.
